Orthodontic Tip : flossing while undergoing orthodontic treatment?

Once you begin orthodontic treatment, you will receive an oral hygiene education on the first day when the brace is attached. Typically, you will receive a kit that includes an orthodontic toothbrush, interdental brush, dental floss, wax (for the parts of the appliance that irritate the mouth), mouthwash, and other items.

 

Before starting orthodontic treatment, you will undergo a dental checkup for cavities, and any necessary treatments will be done before the appliances are attached. However, if you do not maintain good oral hygiene during the treatment period, cavities may develop during the long 1–2 year treatment period.

 

V-shaped toothbrush / Gum End-tuft

 

The orthodontic toothbrush (V-shaped toothbrush) should first be held vertically, positioning the bracket in the V-shaped groove. Then, brush the entire surface of the teeth and around the brackets. Afterward, tilt the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to gently clean both the upper and lower parts around the appliance.

 

Since orthodontic toothbrushes wear out faster than regular toothbrushes, it is important to check the condition of the brush regularly and replace it with a new one when necessary.

 

The End Tuft toothbrush is designed with a 90-degree bend and is used to clean between the molars at the back of the mouth. The head of the toothbrush is smaller than a regular one, and the tip is bent at a 90-degree angle, with the bristles forming a sharp triangular shape. This makes it easier to clean between the brackets and to reach the back molars, where regular toothbrushes may have difficulty reaching. Therefore, the End Tuft toothbrush is used to clean these hard-to-reach areas.

Superfloss has stiff ends with a spongy, thick center, allowing you to insert the stiff ends between your teeth and gently remove plaque. According to studies, it is recommended to use dental floss before brushing your teeth, as this results in less plaque between the teeth and a higher concentration of fluoride between the teeth. It is recommended to floss at least once a day, preferably before bed.

 

 

By using these oral hygiene products and preventing cavities, you can ensure that your orthodontic treatment is completed more quickly!

 

This is because if cavities develop during orthodontic treatment, the orthodontic appliance on the affected tooth will need to be temporarily removed for treatment and reattached afterward. This can make it difficult to provide sufficient orthodontic force during the treatment period.
