White, evenly aligned teeth play a very important role in shaping a person's overall appearance.
The world-famous singer and actress Madonna has a slight gap between her front teeth. She considered this gap a symbol of good luck. Madonna even strongly objected when a magazine edited her teeth using Photoshop, claiming that a four-leaf clover is rare, and just like that, the things that others don’t have can become unique and a point of charm. It seems that Madonna knew how to make what might be considered a flaw into a personal expression. Her slightly separated front teeth were not an issue for her at all.
Similarly, famous Brazilian soccer player Ronaldo also had a gap between his front teeth, but he underwent orthodontic treatment to close the space.
While cultural differences may apply, many female patients express that they are concerned about gaps between their teeth or visible spaces caused by receding gums. This can create an impression that the area looks hollow or that food might get stuck. As a result, it can become a source of self-consciousness when smiling.
In the case of the patient above, they had previously filled the space between their front teeth with resin, but some of the filling broke, prompting them to visit the clinic. The patient did not want any treatment that involved shaving their teeth, and since they were comfortable with the previous resin treatment, we removed the old resin and reshaped it using new resin.
Unlike gaps between teeth, when the gums recede and create visible spaces between the teeth and gums, this is referred to as a "Black Triangle."
A Black Triangle occurs when the gum tissue retracts, leaving a space between the teeth that should have been filled with gum tissue. The dark area created in the mouth gives the appearance of a triangular black gap, which can be aesthetically problematic. This can also occur even after orthodontic treatment has been completed.
In this case, the patient had broken resin in the gap between their front teeth, and the shade had darkened, so they requested a re-treatment with resin. While we were performing the treatment, the patient also wanted to address the space caused by the receding gum tissue. To properly diagnose the extent of the issue, we conducted a Q-ray examination.
Below, you can see the before and after comparison of the resin treatment. The patient requested to address the space caused by the slightly receded gum tissue between their front teeth, so we filled the gap as much as possible. We also explained the importance of proper gum care, such as flossing.
Although resin may discolor over time, it has several advantages: treatment can be done in a single visit, no tooth reduction is required, there’s no need for anesthesia, and there’s no pain involved. Additionally, compared to other prosthetic treatments, it is a more economical option. Furthermore, resin can be removed and replaced later, which makes it a highly flexible and attractive treatment when chosen for the right case.
