Laminates can be applied for various reasons, such as dissatisfaction with the shape or color of teeth, having naturally small teeth (microdontia), severe black triangles, chipped or worn tooth edges, or to close gaps between front teeth.
If you wish to close the gap between your front teeth, it can be addressed through orthodontic treatment, resin fillings, or prosthetic treatments like laminates.
Today, we’d like to introduce a case where a patient had a gap between their front teeth that was previously filled with resin. Because a significant amount of time had passed since the resin treatment, we replaced it with no-prep laminates without removing any tooth structure. The patient’s dental alignment and occlusion were in good condition, making no-prep laminates a viable option.
When laminates are applied, they are often designed to appear slightly brighter and whiter than the natural tooth color, mimicking the effect of teeth whitening.
The patient wanted to improve both the gap between the teeth and the worn appearance of the edges of the adjacent teeth. Although we suggested laminating six teeth, including the canines, to prevent a noticeable color difference between the natural teeth and the laminates, the patient preferred a more natural look over a very bright and conspicuous appearance. Therefore, we proceeded with laminating only the four front teeth, matching the laminates closely to the patient’s original tooth color.
After diagnostic wax-up, temporary teeth were provided. The wax-up model allowed us to fully incorporate the patient’s feedback regarding the length and shape of the teeth before starting the laminate production. The design was slightly adjusted to make the teeth shorter and more rounded than in the diagnostic wax-up.
In the case of no-prep laminates, proper case selection is essential, along with the expertise and experience of a skilled dental technician. Since the laminates are very thin, the area where they bond to the tooth must be seamlessly crafted, requiring precise adhesive techniques by the dentist.
At Yonsei JW Dental Clinic, we collaborate with dental technicians from the world-renowned Oral Design Dental Lab to create laminates.
The laminates were successfully bonded, and the patient was very satisfied with the result.
