Hello! This is Yonsei JW Dental Clinic in Daechi-dong (Gangnam, Seoul, Korea)
Today, let's learn about the process involved in implant treatment.
1. Consultation and Planning
- Initial Consultation: The patient's oral condition is evaluated to determine whether implants are necessary.
- Diagnosis and Treatment Planning: X-rays, CT scans, and other diagnostic tools are used to analyze the oral and bone structure, and the location and number of implants are planned.
2. Surgical Preparation
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is applied to numb the surgical area.
- Sterilization: The surgical area is sterilized to minimize the risk of infection.
3. Implant Placement Surgery
- Incision and Drilling: The gum is incised to expose the bone, and a hole is made in the bone where the implant will be placed.
- Implant Insertion: The titanium implant is inserted into the prepared hole, and the gum is sutured.
4. Healing and Osseointegration
- Healing Period: It takes several months for the implant to fuse with the bone. For the lower jaw, it typically takes 2-4 months, while for the upper jaw, it takes about 3-6 months.
- Temporary Prosthesis: If needed, a temporary prosthesis can be used during the healing period.
5. Prosthesis Attachment
- Abutment Placement: Once healed, the gum is reopened, and the abutment (the connector between the implant and the prosthesis) is attached to the implant.
- Prosthesis Fabrication: A custom prosthesis is made to match the patient’s natural teeth. The prosthesis can be a crown (artificial tooth) or a bridge.
6. Final Prosthesis Attachment
- Prosthesis Attachment: A custom prosthesis is attached to the abutment to complete the implant procedure.
- Final Adjustment: The bite (occlusion) is checked, and adjustments are made if necessary.
7. Follow-up Care
- Regular Check-ups: Regularly check the condition of the implants and undergo check-ups to maintain oral hygiene.
- Oral Hygiene Management: Maintain cleanliness around the implants through proper brushing, flossing, and other oral hygiene practices.
