Hello! This is Yonsei JW Dental Clinic in Daechi-dong (Gangnam, Seoul, Korea)
Dentures have been used for a long time to restore normal chewing function and appearance as a replacement for natural teeth when they are lost. Since traditional dentures rest on the gums, their chewing power is weaker than natural teeth, and some people experience discomfort such as a foreign feeling or pain when chewing food. Additionally, prolonged use of dentures can lead to the gradual loss of gum bone, which may cause facial shape changes or sinking. Implant dentures are a treatment that compensates for these disadvantages of traditional dentures while utilizing the benefits of implants.
Implant Dentures (Overdenture)
It is true that traditional dentures are not firmly fixed, leading to weak chewing ability and discomfort. Implant dentures are a treatment method where 2 to 6 implants are placed, and then the dentures are attached to them, allowing for easy removal and insertion. This approach combines the advantages of both implants and dentures, offering less discomfort than traditional dentures and restoring high stability and chewing power.
Advantages of Implant Dentures:
1. Chewing Ability Similar to Natural Teeth: Traditional dentures provide about 20-30% of the chewing power of natural teeth, while implant dentures can restore up to 70-80% of the chewing power of natural teeth.
2. Excellent Stability: Traditional dentures can become loose due to changes in the gum bone, while implant dentures are firmly fixed in the gums and do not easily fall out, reducing discomfort from denture movement.
3. Prevention of Gum Bone Resorption: While traditional dentures can cause changes in the gum bone over time, implant dentures involve placing artificial tooth roots, which reduces the resorption of the gum bone compared to traditional dentures.
4. Convenient Use: Traditional dentures cover the roof of the mouth, causing a foreign feeling, and are more likely to fall out with prolonged use. Implant dentures, on the other hand, are easier to manage, do not cover the roof of the mouth, and cause less discomfort.
5. Lower Burden: By minimizing the number of implants, the surgical and cost burden is reduced compared to full implant procedures.
Cleaning Implant Dentures
For implant dentures, both the implants and the dentures themselves require proper maintenance. Implants should be brushed, while the implant dentures should be cleaned like regular dentures. After removing the implant dentures from the mouth, they should be cleaned, and the implants in the mouth should be brushed with regular toothpaste using a toothbrush.
Insurance Coverage for Implant Dentures
Unfortunately, implant dentures are not covered by Korean National Health Insurance. This is because the insurance conditions for implants require the upper prosthetic to be a PFM crown, and the insurance conditions for dentures do not support the use of implants to attach dentures.
